After more than 440 competitive games to his credit, Bristol front row Mark Regan has announced his retirement from the professional game at the end of this season. Affectionately known as 'Ronnie', the 37 year-old hooker has earned a host of credits and accolades during his long career. A member of the winning 2003 World Cup squad, he's worn England colours on no fewer than 46 occasions. He played a role in the now infamous Lions tour to South Africa in 1997, and has won both Heineken and Powergen Cup honours with Bath and Leeds respectively.
Born in Bristol, Regan started his career with the Memorial Stadium club in the early 1990s, making his competitive debut against local rivals Bath in February 1992. His England debut followed just three years later against South Africa. A winner every time After a successful British & Irish Lions tour in 1997, Regan moved to West Country neighbours Bath and played a crutial role in the club's victorious Heineken Cup campaign the following year. In 2002 he joined Leeds making 69 appearances, and winning the Powergen Cup in 2005 against his former club Bath. The Bristolian returned home in 2005 for a second spell at the Mem during which time Bristol gained promotion to the Premiership. Not lost to Rugby Though retiring from the game, his infamous 'front row' personality is set not to be lost to rugby. Ronnie intends to develop both his coaching and 'after dinner' speaking skills to the benefit of all with a passion or interest in the sport. |
