Bouncing back from a disappointing home opening close defeat the Aztecs dominated both sides of the ball vs the Trojans in their first game of the season. Fianzo Smith Opened the scoring with his second TD of the season on the first play from scrimmage with a 65 yard run right up the middle. An interception from Aaron Colfer on defense gave the Aztecs the ball right back and Jack Kelly had runs of 27 and then 10 yards to find the endzone. Rookie spin back Andy Morgan then got into the action after another turn over by the Aztecs Defense. He found Receiver Tom Wallis in the endzone from 24 yards out. The Aztecs entered the 2nd quarter leading 20 - 0. This quarter continued as the first had started with Stef Williams (joint top scorer from 2006) galloping in from 8 yards out. This was after a 40 yard sprint from rookie Chris Green to set the score up. |
The following play was a sign that the mainly rookie team still needs a lot of work as they switched off on the kick off and after a miss kick landed just 20 yards down field it was returned all the way to the endzone for Tamworth with many Aztec players not even realising the kick had gone so short. After a 20 yard kick return from Tom Wallis and then a 35 yard run from Jack Kelly the Aztecs were back on the score board through Simon Harris for his first score of the season. The rookie followed his excellent blocking from the offensive line jinking all the 20 yards to the endzone untouched. That left the Aztecs up 34 - 8 at the half. The second half started with an exchange of punts from both teams with the Aztecs having the better of the field position as their defense refused to yield with another interception from Aaron "Emo"Colfer. Large gains from jack Kelly and then Simon Harris kick started the Aztecs Offense again and a 11 yard diving reception from Tom wallis to keep the drive alive ended with Jack Kelly darting in for his 2nd score of the day and 3rd of the season from 5 yards out. After another punishing defensive stand Owain Chambers took a punt back 55 yards for a TD after a great block to seal the edge by Dave Jennison. Stef Williams started the next drive off with a 25 yard powering run and Nick Rogers had 3 carries for 22 yards finishing with a 2 yard TD rumble after a pass interference on receiver Owain Chambers put the offense on the 2 yard line. The Aztecs Defense proved un-penetrable on the day and after a 19 yard run from Stef Williams the Aztecs took a knee to start the celebrations as they got their season back on track with a 56-8 victory.
